Breaking Bad won its first (and last) drama ensemble award, becoming the first drama since Mad Men four years ago to hold the three major TV prizes simultaneously (Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG). Star Bryan Cranston defended his drama actor crown and is the seventh actor to win two trophies in the category. Modern Family made SAG history as the first show to four-peat in comedy ensemble, while Ty Burrell denied Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) an unprecedented eight-peat in comedy actor. The last non-Baldwin winner was Sean Hayes in 2006.In the actress races, Julia Louis-Dreyfus scored her first SAG for Veep in comedy actress and her third overall, tying Megan Mullally with three wins in the category. Maggie Smith took home her first individual SAG award for Downton Abbey.
On the film side, Golden Globe comedy/musical film champAmerican Hustle snagged film ensemble honors, but Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence lost supporting actress to Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave).Dallas Buyers Club grabbed acting awards for Matthew McConaughey and supporting actor front-runner Jared Leto. The win bodes especially well for McConaughey: 15 of the past 19 SAG lead actor winners have gone on to win the Oscar.
Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) continued her march to the Oscar podium, winning lead actress and her third SAG statuette overall. She joins Helen Mirren and Renee Zellweger as the only actresses who've prevailed in both lead and supporting SAG races.
