Ben Affleck's political thriller took three awards, including Best Picture, becoming the fourth film to win the top prize without a Best Director nomination, following Wings, Grand Hotel and Driving Miss Daisy. The film also won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing. This is Affleck's second Oscar after his screenplay win for Good Will Hunting and is also the second for Argo producer George Clooney. Clooney is the third person to win an acting Oscar (Syriana) and Best Picture after Laurence Olivier and Michael Douglas.
Life of Pi led with four wins, including Best Director for Ang Lee. He previously won for Brokeback Mountain and is the 16th person to win the category twice. He is also the first person since George Stevens in 1957 to win two directing awards without his film winning Best Picture, and this is the 22nd time in Oscar history there is a Picture-Director split.
Five years to the day of his second win, Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) became the first man to win Best Actor three times. He joins Walter Brennan, Ingrid Bergman, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep as three-time winners; Katharine Hepburn leads everyone with four wins. Day-Lewis is also the first person to win an acting award in a Spielberg film and the first to win for playing a president.
