Lincoln topped the 85th Academy Awards nominations with 12 on a short list rife with surprises.
The Steven Spielberg drama will vie for Best Picture honors against Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild,Django Unchained,Les Miserables,Life of Pi,Silver Linings Playbook andZero Dark Thirty.
Spielberg is up for Best Director against Michael Haneke (Amour), Ang Lee (Life of Pi), David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook), Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild). Ben Affleck (Argo) and Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), who were widely expected to snag nods, were snubbed.

Lincoln star Daniel Day-Lewis will contend for an unprecedented third Best Actor Oscar against Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables), Joaquin Phoenix (The Master) and Denzel Washington (Flight).Cooper's co-stars, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver all landed nods as well, making Silver Linings Playbook the first film since 1981's Reds to score nominations in all four acting categories.The Best Actress race pits the oldest and youngest nominees ever: Amour's Emmanuelle Riva, who turns 86 on the night of the Oscars, and Beasts of the Southern Wild's Quvenzhane Wallis, who is 9.
