White Hunter
[1936, Movie]
White Hunter: Review
This is a quintessential safari picture with each cliche and stereotype firmly in place. Because of a troubled past, explorer Baxter lives as an exile. He's hired by Lawson, the man responsible for his father's death, to lead an expedition into darkest Africa. All past deeds are forgotten when Baxter falls in love with Lawson's daughter, Lang, who is along for the adventure. Through skillful editing of much stock footage, this studio-shot picture has a realistic look that makes its story more interesting than it deserves to be. The characters and dialog are exactly what one would expect, acted in the usual fashion by a competent cast. The audience always knows what's going to happen before the characters do (a leopard hiding in a tree is obvious to everyone but the seemingly knowledgeable guide and his party), but for what this is, it's not too bad. Probably worth a look for camp fans.
