This well-done wartime British entry, directed by Anthony Asquith, follows the crew of the submarine Sea Tiger as they proceed from a week of shore leave at home to a dangerous mission to sink the German battleship Brandenberg. The sub's commander, Lt. Taylor (John Mills), directs SeaTiger through a mine field so it can get a shot off at the German warship, but circumstances prevent the Britons from knowing whether they have managed to sink their target (they have). After avoiding German pursuit, the submarine runs out of fuel, but a tanker is discovered in a Danish port, and

the Brits and the local resistance manage to hold off the Germans long enough to complete refueling. Then it's back to England, where seaman Hobson (Eric Portman) finds his estranged wife waiting for him. This above-average submarine movie manages to avoid most of the cliches of the genre,

generates more than a little tension, and offers universally strong performances.
