Sad to say, Nick Cassavetes seems to have studied his father's films thoroughly and come away with all the wrong lessons: His first film as director is a meandering, shapeless bore. Gena Rowlands stars as Mildred, a middle-aged woman undergoing a

quiet crisis. Her husband is dead, her beloved son Ethan (David Sherrill) is moving to San Francisco and her sullen daughter, Ann Mary Margaret (Moira Kelly), has just left home in a huff. Having defined her life by the needs of her family, Mildred is left at loose ends. She finds new purpose

baby-sitting for J.J. (Jake Lloyd), the small son of troubled neighbor Monica (Marisa Tomei), and develops a complicated relationship with the watchful youngster and his brassy, unhappy mother. There are some fine performances on display here: Rowlands is her usual transcendent self, while Tomei

and Gerard Depardieu -- playing Big Tommy, a French-Canadian trucker who brings a ray of romance into Mildred's life -- bring welcome shading and depth to their characters. But the story ambles along without direction, wearing out its welcome long before Mildred takes her first decisive step

toward a new life.
