first fails to heed the advice, which eventually leads to Mifune's wreaking vengeance without the warlord's permission. Romance then heightens the conflict, as both the samurai and the warlord fall in love with a princess, daughter of the man Mifune has killed. She hates Mifune for killing her

father and chooses to marry the warlord. After a number of years Mifune is killed in a major battle, fighting beside the warlord. Running nearly three hours, the picture is long but is replete with Mifune's excellent characterization and an entrancing 16th-century atmosphere.
