The widowed Bell discovers a 20-year-old dance program from a ball and decides to seek out the men she danced with. The story is told in episodic fashion, as she becomes disillusioned with what she finds--Blanchar is an abortionist, Jouvet is a sleazy lawyer, Fernandel has become a

hairdresser, and Baur has found God. She finds that the only one she really loved has killed himself, leaving behind a son whom Bell adopts. An uneven and often overwrought script hampers what in the 1930s was a vastly popular picture, taking a top prize at the Venice Film Festival. It was one of

the first films of an episodic nature in France, paving the way for a number of such pictures. Today, however, it is of little interest except for devotees of Duvivier. Duvivier trod the same path again in his Hollywood period with LYDIA (1941).
