What is Tycus? It's a comet that's en route to destroying the Moon. What is Project Archangel? An underground haven built to withstand this calamity. Who cares? Die-hard fans of futuristic disaster movies you know who you are. 2029: Tabloid reporter Jake Lowe (Peter Onorati) is surprised when he's contacted by Stan, (Chick Vennera), a buddy from his army days. Stan lures Jake away from his wife and job and into mysterious Project Archangel with the promise of a scoop. Stan works for eccentric tycoon Peter Crawford (Dennis Hopper), a scientific visionary, who knows Tycus will devastate the Earth after its collision with the Moon. Stan invites Jake to join the select few Crawford has chosen to survive the impending annihilation. Naturally, Crawford's messianic mission isn't going off without glitches. Some of the elect are unhappy with the number of requisitioned slots for their loved ones, and Crawford himself has failed to fly in his own family in a timely fashion. As the asteroid picks up speed, Jake and Crawford must scramble to save their relatives, and Jake's bias against Crawford's God-complex may jeopardize the entire Archangel mission. That this workmanlike, small-scale rip-off of DEEP IMPACT (1998) is at all effective is due largely to Ornorati's persuasive performance as Jake. But Michael and Kevin Goetz's screenplay stretches the material beyond its limits; what might have made a nail-biting half-hour episode of a sci-fi anthology is instead an attenuated feature. As the meteor burns its way toward the Moon, the legacy of science fiction greats like Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov is engulfed by the shadow of disaster movie impresario Irwin Allen. The film's characters are mere extras in a drama starring Mother Nature, and the comet gets all the best scenes.
