Aimed directly at children, this 1930s programmer is the story of a horse and dog born on the same day. The two four-legged creatures become fast friends and live together in the wilderness. When a pack of wolves attacks a herd of wild horses, both animals fight their instincts and save

the herd. Next they return to the civilized world, where Arledge trains the horse for a big race. With the encouragement of his canine chum, the horse wins, despite the interference of Vogan, a nasty gambler. This is the sort of movie that depends on the strengths and believability of its animal

performers. Both beasts pass this acid test with high grades. The film is at its best when the two natural performers are allowed to go through their moves. The sequences with the humans, particularly the mushy love story with Arledge and Latimer, detract from this animal tale. But overall it's an

entertaining film, enjoyable on its simplistic level. Directed with care for its animal performers, it makes one wonder just how they got them to do all they did. For that, it's rather remarkable.
