Shot during 1989's "Blonde Ambition" world tour, TRUTH OR DARE is a documentary look at Madonna Louise Ciccone, arguably the most famous woman in the world today.

Director Alek Keshishian, who cut his teeth on music video, follows the pop diva from stage to hotel room to parties, press conferences, rehearsals and shopping expeditions. He photographs her talking to her family, eating, getting her hair done and horsing around with her dancers, back-up singers

and other tour personnel, then intercuts the footage--shot in self-conscious B&W--with color footage of her elaborate stage show. The result is a surprisingly engaging portrait of a media phenomenon for whom the distinction between "onstage" and "offstage" is almost irrelevant.

Keshishian is ruthless, showing Madonna as she bitches at the tech crew, strips in her dressing room, prays at her mother's grave (there's a wireless mike concealed in the dirt) and fellates a bottle during a parlor game--the "Truth or Dare" of the title. About the only thing Keshishian doesn't

show is Madonna at home cleaning the toilet, but that's because she's on the road, wrapped in the cocoon of touring ritual and intense, superficial camaraderie. But you get the sense that this is her real life; when then-boyfriend Warren Beatty passes through and suggests she isn't interested in

living off-camera, the remark sounds unexpectedly profound.

Madonna is a star for the voyeuristic age, an age when wars start on television and confession is only good for the soul if it's picked up by the wires. When the camera captures Madonna observing two of her male dancers kiss, she's absorbed by the same contradictory spectacle audiences experience

when they look at TRUTH OR DARE: intimacy designed to be watched.
