After serving five years in the service in India, a regiment of British sailors is happy to be returning home. However, their emotions are crushed when it's learned that the homecoming is only temporary, and they have only six hours to reunite with loved ones before returning to sea.

Banks, a colonel trapped between loyalty to the services and his sickly wife, Robson; Shaw, a captain involved with the ship's nurse Hilliard; and a romance between a sailor and a dockside shopkeeper comprise the three main story lines. Despite the large cast and several subplots, the film is told

with style and depth, rarely pandering to mere manipulation of audience emotions. The ensemble plays well together with standout performances by Banks and Robson. The photography by cinematographer Howe is excellent. This was noted director Pommer's second film for Alexander Korda in London after

a brief stay in Hollywood. He is reported to have said that UFA in Berlin stole the basic plot of the film and used it in A PASS AND A PROMISE with Heinrich George, one of the greatest actors of his time on the German stage and in German films.
