The Trip: Review
In 1967, when LSD tripping was quickly becoming the in thing to do, what better premise than to make a movie exactly on that subject? So here we have this overly long, nonstop bombardment of fantastic visual images supposedly going on in the mind of someone embarking on his first trip. Some of the visuals are stunning, but they are much better suited for a short rather than feature-length film. Fonda plays a television director who decides to clear up problems generated by his complex personal and professional life. Under Dern's guidance, he takes off on a night of images symbolizing his troubled mind, doing such things as dying and being reborn, getting chased by hooded horsemen, and experiencing sex with a mysterious girl who teaches him to better understand the proceedings. These images more closely resemble a bad dream following an overdose of pepperoni-and-onion pizza than the result of ingesting hallucinogenic drugs.
