A no-frills western that pokes a little fun at its own genre. Tone is a rookie newspaperman from back East sent out to help stop William's protection-racket gang. He gets help from Crawford and Devine along with Russian Auer, and the foursome gets into one scrape after another. Straight-up

laughs combined with gunplay give it a strange mix. Tone gets some genuine laughs at the beginning with his first-time exploits on a horse. The film also marked Tone's return to movies after he had left Hollywood to pursue a Broadway career. Moran almost steals the film as a wild rancher's

daughter who will stop at nothing to get her hands on Tone. The film was intended to be a standard western, but veteran director Dwan knew better than to follow the original script; he had it doctored into parody in a one-day rewrite session.
