Director Robert Aldrich's vain attempt to repeat the box-office bonanza of his 1967 hit THE DIRTY DOZEN comes off only adequately. Shot on location in the Philippines with an all-star cast, TOO LATE THE HERO tells a tale of bravery and cowardice among dissimilar men. It's the nadir of WW

II, and the Japanese are ensconced on an island in the New Hebrides, where they have an observation base and are able to watch shipping in the area and order air strikes. The Allies' problem is how to get them out of there. Lt. Lawson (Cliff Robertson) is a gold-bricking US Navy officer who is

doing his best to stay out of harm's way. Because he can speak Japanese, Lawson is recruited--against his will--to be part of what may be a suicide mission to knock out the Japanese outpost. The leader of the mission is Capt. Hornsby (Denholm Elliott), a wishy-washy Brit who shows few signs of

intelligence, and while Cockney private Tosh Hearne (Michael Caine) doesn't like Lawson, he does share the American's belief that Hornsby is ill-suited for command. With this unlikely band of heroes assembled, the soldiers make their way to the Japanese encampment to complete their mission.

Although it contains many of the same elements as THE DIRTY DOZEN and boasts a good cast, TOO LATE THE HERO finds veteran action director Aldrich resting on his laurels, delivering a rather bland retread of past success.
