This pleasant film about a love triangle has Porter and Waterston playing a pair of friends who tour Europe in a battered car. They meet many women but are both attracted to Rampling, an English girl. The two friends make a pact, vowing to keep the relationship with her on a platonic

level. Porter meets Roberts and goes off with her for a time while Waterston gradually finds himself growing attracted to Rampling. He keeps the pact in mind, though, and resists all temptations. When Porter returns, however, he immediately has an affair with Rampling, which causes a break in the

friendship with Waterston. The latter leaves Rampling and Porter, crushed but with newfound maturity. There is a certain naive charm to this film, based on a fine short story by Shaw. The actors are completely natural, making their characters and the film believable and often touching. The

direction has an easy-going style that never has to rely on heavy-handed symbolism to make a point. Interesting and highly enjoyable.
