A beautifully photographed, feminist reworking of the classic story of Cinderella, first shown on US television under the misleading title THREE NUTS FOR CINDERELLA. Popelka (Libuse Safrankova), who is resourceful, kind, independent and very beautiful, lives with her cruel stepmother (Carola Braunbock) and is treated like a servant. Popelka lives in the attic with an owl, in whom she confides her woes, and comes into possession of three acorns (the titular "nuts") with magic properties: If she makes a wish and throws a nut over her shoulder, her wish comes true. While in the woods, Popelka meets a Prince (Pavel Travnicek) and his two companions. Since she's dressed in masculine clothes, they take her for a boy and a bold one at that. Popelka sets out to prove that anything the Prince can do, she can do better — and she can, surpassing his skill in clever wordplay and archery — she even ruins his aim by tossing a snowball at a critical moment. The prince, tired of kowtowing aristocrats, is delighted to have found a new friend. He's also being pressured by his parents to get married, something he has no interest in doing. The King and Queen (Rolf Hoppe, Karin Lesch) throw a ball and all suitable, wealthy and well-born girls in the area are invited. Popelka, naturally, is not, and even if she had been she's stuck at home cleaning. But Popelka's woodland friends come to the rescue, and dressed in her party finery she charms the prince. The usual complications ensue, and when the young lovers are finally reunited Popelka uses her final wish for a beautiful wedding dress.
