A strange amalgam of crime and soap opera, this film was Crawford's last under her Warners contract. She is the stylish leader of a gang of thieves. Her brains are what makes the band function, but her beauty and body are what turn on the gang's killer, Brian. The group successfully robs
a gambling parlor in New Orleans, and Crawford now has enough money to pay for a hospital stay. Her eyesight has been dimming and she travels to a hospital far away from Louisiana to have some exploratory eye surgery. Brian is a jealous lover and a man who always wants to be in action, but he
agrees to cease robbing until Crawford has recovered from her medical problem. The FBI, in the person of Webb, gets a clue to Crawford's location and tracks her to the hospital where Morgan is her opthalmologist. As is often the case, the patient falls in love with her physician and vice versa.
During her overlong stay in the hospital, Morgan and Crawford find much to care for in each other. Brian is still hiding out with his brother, Carey, and Carey's wife, Aldon. Brian suspects that Crawford is malingering in the hospital, but he can't show his face, so he hires a private detective,
MacDonald, to find out what's happening. Crawford has decided to give up her life of crime, but she fears Morgan will be hurt by her past and may even be in danger from Brian, so she tells the doctor that she doesn't love him, hoping that he will get out of her life, thus saving his own. Crawford
attempts to contact Brian, fearing what the crazed man may do to Morgan. Morgan is in the operating theater in the midst of surgery when Brian comes in, armed and dangerous. MacDonald has reported what's going on and Brian means to rub out the doctor. Just as Brian is taking a bead on Morgan, Webb
and his FBI men get there in time to stop him. Since Crawford is apparently reformed, she will be given a short term in the women's slammer and Morgan will, no doubt, be standing outside the gate when she is released. A little bit of DARK VICTORY mixed with I WANT TO LIVE.
