Rathbone is a French secret agent in WW I who ventures behind enemy lines into Alsace-Lorraine on a mission and to visit his mother, Dresser. While staying at his mother's inn, Rathbone falls in love with Johnson, the wife of a German general, and the two carry on a passionate romance.

Their bond is broken, however, when Rathbone admits that he was responsible for the death of her nephew. In an act of vengeance, Johnson informs on Rathbone and he is executed by the Germans. Johnson then commits suicide. Dresser accepts the death of her son stoically and makes plans to carry out

his mission. A gloomy picture which was far from uplifting for a Depression era audience.
