A likable adventure romp which begins in India and then takes off to China, showcasing some glorious locations as well as MGM's two big box-office stars. Gable is in Bombay posing as an insurance detective for Lloyd's of London, while Russell is pretending to be a friend of the royal

family. In actuality, both are jewel thieves intent on stealing a priceless diamond necklace belonging to duchess Ralph. When Gable realizes Russell's plan he allows her to do the dirty work, while planning to snatch the stolen goods from her later on. Russell, however, is aware of his plan, and

the pair decide to make their getaway together. They hop a freighter captained by the unscrupulous Lorre, who informs on them in order to receive a hefty reward. Before Scotland Yard inspector Boulton can track them down, however, Gable and Russell escape to Hong Kong. Gable and Russell have a

difficult time selling the necklace, however, and are soon desperate for money. Gable steals a British officer's uniform and concocts a scheme to confiscate funds from a crooked Chinese merchant. While dressed as a British officer, Gable is rallied into an emergency operation to evacuate British

and Chinese citizens from a village recently invaded by the Japanese. Gable performs heroically and is rewarded with the Victoria Cross. After rushing off to wed Russell, Gable turns himself in, agrees to serve his punishment, and then promises to reenlist. A fine studio entry which manages to

successfully mix romance, adventure, comedy, and the then-necessary patriotism into one picture, resulting in a delightful audience pleaser. Although the story falters somewhat by the halfway point, THEY MET IN BOMBAY is definitely worth a look, if only for Gable and Russell. If one looks closely,

Alan Ladd can be spotted in one of his numerous pre-THIS GUN FOR HIRE bit parts.
