Shearer is a young woman whose novelist father, Stone, is having an affair with another woman, Millard. She decides to take her mother, Bennett, on a vacation and they travel to a resort. There Shearer meets Montgomery and the two fall in love. They make wedding plans, then Shearer

discovers that Montgomery's mother is the very woman with whom her father is having an affair. She calls off the marriage and the pair decide to take a final farewell boat ride. A storm comes up suddenly and the boat is missing. Stone and Millard join in the search, and after the young lovers are

found, the old lovers decide for the good of all concerned to call off their relationship. Stone returns to Bennett and Shearer and Montgomery are free to marry.

Not a very interesting film nowadays, despite Shearer at her loveliest moving through an awesome array of silk pajamas, swimsuits, polo outfits, and evening gowns. Shearer had become one of the first silent stars to make a hit in talkies with her performances in THE TRIAL OF MARY DUGAN and THE

LAST OF MRS. CHEYNEY (both 1929), but this overblown melodrama nearly dropped her back into the ranks. Montgomery's career, however, got a big boost from being paired with Shearer and he went on to become one of the most reliable leading men in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s. Shearer earned

an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in this film, but lost to her own performance in THE DIVORCEE.
