Ten-year-old Koyanagi lives in the Japanese countryside with his sister, Sakabe, and his father, a widowed Buddhist priest. When the father decides to remarry, Koyanagi's world falls apart. His father places him with a parishioner in a different village so there will be no problems with

the new marriage. The boy's new home is run by an old woman who despises children and is constantly correcting the boy. Tired of her and the menial tasks he must perform, Koyanagi takes an idol he finds and talks with it about the troubles in his life. However, the idol has come from a village

shrine, and Koyanagi is arrested for theft. He is returned to his father, who is having troubles of his own with his new wife. She tosses the boy's prized amulet away and leaves when he accuses her of stealing it. Later he and his sister go in search of their stepmother. However, this is taken to

mean something larger than their innocent intent, and Koyanagi is placed for adoption.
