A marvelous, beautifully told story has Dupree playing an elderly woman who is painfully lonely. While traveling on a European train she meets a rather unusual family of charming connivers. They've just been kicked out of the Riviera and see this rich, lonely old woman as their next meal

ticket. However, Dupree proves to be not so easy a mark, teaching Young and Burke, along with their children Gaynor and Fairbanks, Jr., a thing or two about life. The family even learns about something called "work." Young gets a job as a car salesman in an art deco showroom demonstrating "Flying

Wombat" cars (a very low-slung fast modernistic model). The story is told with sensitivity and the right amount of humor, with a loving, warm-hearted ending. The photography and music, both excellent, received Oscar nominations. The film's preview had Dupree dying at the end, but this proved

unpopular with test audiences. The cast and crew were called back and a new, happier ending was shot. The film earned Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Score, and Best Original Score.
