Mitchum stars in this atmospheric western as a gunrunner hired by the local bigshot, Armendariz, and his brother Mendoza. Mitchum crosses the border into Texas to carry out the mission but breaks his leg and is forced to remain among the gringos, receiving care from London, the unsatisfied

wife of Merrill. Mitchum soon learns that Merrill is working for Armendariz, attempting to rid the area of Apaches for the sake of the railroad. Mitchum loses the guns he was sent for and is forced to flee south of the border on a murder charge. He runs into Merrill, who has been badly beaten by

the Indians, and helps him and his troops to safety. Armendariz sends a gunman to kill Mitchum, but in a showdown, Mitchum is the one left standing. His horse is killed, he lays down his gun, and he returns to Texas and his beloved London in the hope of starting anew. This beautifully

photographed, gritty western, heavy on the close-ups was produced by Mitchum's own company. Legendary baseball pitcher Leroy "Satchel" Paige appears here as a cavalry sergeant.
