During WW I, Muni is a French pilot with a reputation for getting his observers and gunners killed. Other members of the squadron refuse to fly with him, but along comes Hayward. The two men become fast friends and successful flying partners, and for a time it looks as though Muni's jinx

is broken. Complications arise, though, when Hayward falls in love with nurse Hopkins, not knowing that she is Muni's wife. Eventually the truth comes out, but before the men can settle their differences, they are called into the air once more. They become embroiled in a desperate air battle, and

when the plane limps back to the aerodrome, Hayward is dead and Muni badly injured. He is taken to the hospital, where Hopkins nurses him back to health and asks his forgiveness. Routine romantic triangle stuff, but there are some good aerial sequences and above-average performances. The film is a

remake of a 1928 French effort, L'EQUIPAGE, and the Muni role was originally offered to Charles Boyer. When he turned it down, Muni stepped forward and said that he was interested. Although he does a good job, the picture is something of an anomaly in Muni's career, bracketed by his fine

performances in historical roles in THE LIFE OF EMILE ZOLA, just before, and JUAREZ, just after this hackneyed melodrama. Director Litvak, who had directed L'EQUIPAGE in France, made his American debut here, and he later married Hopkins. Clive, as the squadron commander, gives a very good

performance, which is surprising because he was drinking heavily all through the production and all his scenes had to be shot before noon because he was uselessly bombed by lunch time. For over-the-shoulder shots someone had to hold him up. Less than three months after the release of THE WOMAN I

LOVE, Clive had drank himself to death.
