An uncomplicated family history features Tucker as a man whose domineering ways drive his children to hate him. One son dies in the Korean conflict; another ends up in jail for murder. Hand manages to get out of the family before he ends up like his older brothers, while Heiden is the

daughter no man is good enough for. This instigates a climactic fight between Tucker and Heiden's suitor. The latter is played by Baer, who also wrote, directed, and produced the film. The story never makes an attempt to grapple with any psychological issues, but merely is presented in a

straightforward manner. Thus motivations remain dull and characters all fit stereotypes. Baer does do a neat job in re-creating the film's era (1949). Baer took up film direction after achieving some dubious success as the idiot farm boy, Jethro, on TV's "The Beverly Hillbillies."
