This adventure film offers no surprises and tries to get by on an all-star cast, though most of the stars are a bit too old to be taken seriously in their roles as battle-hardened soldiers of fortune. Burton is the leader of a force of mercenaries who invade an African nation intent on

rescuing a former president of that country and putting him back into office so British industrialists can return to business as usual. The first third of the picture has Burton rounding up the necessary men (Moore, Harris, and Kruger among them) for the mission, followed by an intense training

period. Veteran hack Andrew V. McLaglen fails to inject much excitement into the proceedings and falls back on some substandard Sam Peckinpah-style slow-motion bloodletting.
