This hopeless remake of the 1945 film stars Faye Dunaway as Lady Barbara Skelton, a woman turned highway robber, and Alan Bates as Captain Jerry Jackson, her highwayman lover. There's plenty of sophomoric, racy humor to cover the skimpy plot, and the ensemble is clearly better than the

weak material. The photography is lush, making good use of the English countryside. A scene in which Lady Barbara and Jackson's girl friend (Marina Sirtis) go at each other with horsewhips and Lady Barbara tears her opponent's dress to ribbons provoked a censorship controversy. Director Michael

Winner protested it was art and rounded up such notable figures as author Kingsley Amis, and directors John Schlesinger, Karel Reisz, and Lindsay Anderson to back him up. The scene remained. Leslie Arliss, who directed the original 1945 mess, contributed his talents to the script for this

remake.
