After spending five years in Brazil, Hans Albers returns to his family in Germany only to discover that his sister, Gerda Maurus, a noted opera singer, has become a morphine addict. He takes Maurus to a sanitarium so she can be freed from her addiction. However, Peter Lorre, the

hunchbacked leader of the dope-smuggling outfit, fears Maurus will expose his operation, so he has her kidnaped. Albers teams up with Trude von Molo, another opera singer whom he initially suspects to be a gang member, to discover what's going on. Later Albers finds that the opera company's makeup

jars have been used to hide the drugs. He rescues his sister and exposes a well-known industrialist as the head of the operation. This strong story about the underworld of drug dealing is given dramatic power by Albers' convincing performance in the lead, with excellent support from Lorre, the

evil opposite of Albers' hero. But THE WHITE DEMON proved too controversial for German censors; the original film was re-cut, emphasizing adventure more than drugs. This could not diminish the film's power, however, as a well-acted and nicely photographed work of high drama. A French version

called NARCOTICS (STUPEFIANTS) was shot concurrently with the German film, utilizing many of the same production team, and with Lorre repeating his role.
