Former weight-lifting champion Paul Naschy [Jacinto Molina] became the horror movie king of Spain playing Count Waldemar Daninsky, a sympathetic werewolf who can only be killed by someone he loves. Naschy made his debut as the character in LA MARCA DEL HOMBRE LOBO (known in the US as

FRANKENSTEIN'S BLOODY TERROR), and continued in LOS NOCHES DEL HOMBRE LOBO and EL HOMBRO QUE VINO DE UMMO. THE WEREWOLF VS. THE VAMPIRE WOMAN is the fourth entry in the series in which Daninsky, having been dispatched by a silver bullet in his previous outing, is inadvertently revived by a doctor

who removes the bullet during an autopsy. The werewolf kills his captors and then travels back to his castle, where he joins up with two female students searching for the tomb of the legendary vampire woman, Countess Waldessa (Patty Shepard), a Countess Bathory type rumored to have bathed in the

blood of virgins. When one of the women accidentally cuts herself and the blood falls on Waldessa's face, the vampire is revived. She quickly "vampirizes" one the students and kidnaps the other, leaving Daninsky to rescue her. Although it was a huge hit in Spain--that country's eighth-highest

grossing film in 1970--the film simply isn't very good. The script (coauthored by Naschy) is predictable, and the direction by Leon Klimovsky is grating, mainly due to his overuse of the zoom lens. By this time Naschy was quite a power in Spain's horror cinema and he would soon begin directing as

well as writing and acting.
