heads for Monte Carlo where he wins a fortune. Back in his hometown, a man who has killed himself is mistaken for Mastroianni. Learning of this, Mastroianni settles in Rome, where he hopes to start a new life using a different identity. He finds this new existence just as dull as the one he ran

away from, but he keeps quiet for fear of being found out. When his identification papers are stolen, Mastroianni suspects a thief living in the same house. Mastroianni runs off with his landlady's daughter and ends up losing all his money gambling. He decides his only solution is to die once

more; he accomplishes this by killing the thief. He then returns to his original village where he learns his wife has remarried. Mastroianni refuses to go back to the life he once led and consequently spends his time visiting his own grave.
