Tucked away on a small South Seas island is a clan of life worshipers led by fun-loving Laughton. The family eats, drinks, and makes merry, caring little for anything else, least of all work. As the story unfolds episodically, Laughton and family encounter problems with cock fighting,

money, and an always-out-of-gas boat. Bates is the matriarch of a rival family with a totally opposite set of values. This causes some problems when Laughton's son Hall falls for her daughter Drake. The film's problem is that it's as lackadaisical as Laughton. There's really not enough here to

justify one and one-half hours, though the cast isn't bad. There are some fun moments, but these are stretched out along the film's course with the rest serving as filler. Based on a novel by the authors of Mutiny on the Bounty, the movie boasts some lavish special effects during a storm sequence.

Nevertheless, this overbudgeted comedy (with a production cost of $847,000) was a poor box-office attraction.
