A nostalgic remembrance of those childhood summers that seemed to last forever, THE TREE WE HURT follows two young boys on the Greek isle of Chios in 1960 as they pass the summer before entering the fifth grade. Director Avdeliodis concentrates on the games, stunts, and pranks pulled by

the neighborhood boys as they try to escape the chores that their parents assign them. Episodes include a battle with a nest of angry wasps, the taunting of the village idiot, a skirmish with some adults from a nearby hamlet, a sneaky foray into an orchard that results in the boys getting sick on

hastily gobbled plums, the adoption of a dog that has wandered in from another village only to have its mean-spirited owner arrive months later and take it away, and the earning of a few extra drachma by serving as altar boys during funeral processions. Although the scenery is undeniably beautiful

and the young actors charming, THE TREE WE HURT tries much too hard to capture the feel of such Francois Truffaut classics as THE 400 BLOWS and SMALL CHANGE without ever realizing the nuances, keen observation, or depth of character that Truffaut evokes.
