The effort by Morgan and Carson to stage a Broadway musical against the wishes of ancient opera star Bates provides the basis for the tired-and-true plot around which some decent musical numbers, brilliant settings and costumes, and a sufficient number of laughs is built. Morgan eventually

gets to see the show through, given help by Bates' husband Sakall as well as her granddaughter, Vickers, a budding star in her own right. Not at all the same plot as the fine 1929 film with the same title from Warner Bros., but this one made good money at the box office despite its hackneyed

screenplay. Songs include: "A Gal in Calico," "A Rainy Night in Rio," "Oh but I Do," "Through a Thousand Dreams," "A Solid Citizen of the Solid South," and "I Happened to Walk Down First Street."
