Damon Runyon's coined-language version of the same nativity play done as a western by John Ford (THREE GODFATHERS, 1948, and the silent MARKED MEN, 1919) and done again by many other directors, features a young Young as a rich boy disinherited and abjured by his father when he marries

socially unacceptable Broadway babe Furness. After Young squanders the remnants of his cash on an extended around-the-world honeymoon, gold digger Furness discovers that she truly loves the lad. Pursued by confidence-man Cabot and his two tough-talking cronies, all convinced that Furness

double-crossed them in a scam, the now-indigent couple seek refuge in a barn. Their pursuers arrive to find the lone and very pregnant Furness on the straw amidst the cattle. They assist with the delivery of her infant on a cold, snowy Christmas. Their hearts softened by the birth, they contribute

some cash to get the falsely accused Young released from the local jail in a town called--what else?--Bethlehem.
