Produced by Roger Corman's Concorde Pictures, THE TERROR WITHIN is a completely uninspired mess that borrows shamelessly from Ridley Scott's ALIEN and James Cameron's ALIENS. It's the 21st century, and a group of soldiers commanded by Hal (George Kennedy) live under the Mojave Desert while

the desolate surface of the planet is populated by gargoylelike monsters. While searching for food on the surface, David (Andrew Stevens) finds a pregnant woman and brings her back underground. In no time, a monster bursts from her womb and wreaks havoc in the soldiers' world, killing everyone but

David and a medical officer. THE TERROR WITHIN is a prime example of the Hollywood notion that "if it worked once, it can work again, and again." Corman, the "King of the Bs," has never been one to offer the public completely original material, but this film stoops lower than usual--everything is

borrowed, right down to the sets. What's more, the performances are mediocre at best, with Kennedy sleepwalking through his role and Stevens trying valiantly but becoming just another victim of Thierry Notz's nonexistent direction. Even the film's real star, the monster, is a special effects joke,

not much scarier than the average Halloween costume.
