A great looking near-film noir which doesn't have much going for it in the dialog department. The basic story line bears a truly remarkable resemblance to a much better film, ANATOMY OF A MURDER (1959). Chandler is a hotshot lawyer known for his ability to get guilty criminals off the

hook. He is hired by married couple Stewart and Reed to defend the latter, who is on trial for murdering a bartender who made a pass at Stewart and ripped her dress. The jury finds Reed innocent, but only after Chandler undermines the testimony of sheriff Carson. Carson plans revenge by getting

juror Russell to admit that she accepted a bribe from Chandler in return for a vote of "not guilty." Things look rough for Chandler until it is proven that Russell is the sheriff's mistress. The finale has Chandler getting his freedom and being reconciled with his wife Crain, while Carson gets

gunned down on the courthouse steps by his mistress. Arnold also directed IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE and THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, which should make it obvious that direction was one of this picture's problems.
