homesteaders who have moved north after the Civil War. They enlist the help of Union Army vet McCrea, whom they found almost dead after he had been ambushed. The homesteaders happen to be traveling across the land that is ruled by McCrea's half-brother Kelley. McCrea works for peace on both sides,

but to no avail. At the same time, Ansara, a local cattle rustler, uses the homesteaders as a cover for his stealing. He was also the one who left McCrea for dead at the beginning of the film. All is settled in the big gun battle at the end, with Kelley getting shot and the land falling to McCrea.

He lets the homesteaders stay on the land and starts keeping house himself with Mayo, who led a less than pure life before, but like everyone else in the film, gets a second chance to do good.
