An exciting, funny, innovative, and brilliant effort from one of France's most prolific playwrights and filmmakers, Sacha Guitry. Considered to be Guitry's masterpiece, THE STORY OF A CHEAT is told to the audience by the cheat (Guitry, as usual, playing the role) himself, as he writes

his memoirs in a Parisian cafe, while on the screen we see the events he is speaking of, acted out without dialogue. All we get to hear is Guitry's witty commentary. His life story begins with the first time he is caught being a cheat, an act which gets him sent to his room without supper. In a

stroke of luck, however, his entire family eat poison mushrooms that evening and die. Thus begins a long string of events in which Guitry benefits from his cheating instead of paying for it. Not only is the film itself unique, with its cutting back and forth between past and present and its use of

reverse motion and wipes, but its title sequence is also exceptional. Like Francois Truffaut's FAHRENHEIT 451, the credits are spoken by the director, but here we see the characters and filmmakers involved. Not surprisingly, his experimentation and humor have gone on to influence greatly those

who've seen the picture, especially the filmmakers of the New Wave. It was chiefly the favorable criticism of filmmakers such as Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, and Alain Resnais (who cited THE STORY OF A CHEAT as one of the primary influences of HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR) that have brought about the

reassessment of Guitry. An outstanding contribution to cinematic and narrative technique which Guitry never quite equaled again.
