A limp attack on spiritualists starring Farr as a young college student obsessed with the memory of his dead girl friend. Desperate to contact her in the great beyond, Farr dabbles in the occult and manages to conjure up his girl during a seance. This little bite of the supernatural gives

Farr a nervous breakdown. He is nursed back to health by Lindsay, who has been waiting in the wings for her chance at romance with Farr since childhood. Eventually her love conquers his obsession with the dead. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of SPELL is that the censors banned the film

because they feared it would offend spiritualists (obviously a special interest group much more powerful back in 1941 than today). Luckily (depending on how you look at it), noted spiritualist Hannen Swaffer approved the film and agreed to appear in a prolog saying so.
