This early German film, heavy with symbolism, caused controversy with its graphic depiction of the birth of a child. The film was banned in Germany, though American censors apparently found nothing objectionable. The film, a mix of science and fantasy, opens with the engagement party of a

young girl and her elderly fiance. Gripped by the realization of what she is doing, she flees in horror from the party, later meeting a young sailor. They fall in love, and she sails away with him. When they return home, she enters a hospital and gives birth to a child, who will later follow in

his sailor father's footsteps. There is minimal dialog and four songs. The actors do a capable job.
