Uncle Lucca (Vittorio Gassman) is no angel. He drinks, seduces attractive women at the drop of a hat, and in no way can he be called a model citizen. Down on his luck, Lucca needs three million lire for an operation, so he persuades his nephew Ricardo (Giancarlo Giannini), a staid and sober

businessman, to front him the cash. Disdainful of his uncle's bohemian lifestyle and outrageous behavior, Ricardo is nonetheless fascinated by the old rogue. But is he really his uncle? There is some doubt in Ricardo's mind. The charismatic Uncle Lucca draws Ricardo into his scruffy life, and as

their relationship deepens over the course of several comic misadventures he finds new values, pleasures and freedoms that he has never experienced before. His sleazy uncle has given him a new lease on life.

Screenwriter-turned-director Franco Brusati helmed three films during the 1960s before receiving international acclaim for 1973's bittersweet BREAD AND CHOCOLATE, starring Nino Manfredi. Brusati employs popular storytelling forms, highlighted by satire, burlesque and slapstick, to underscore his

social points. In THE SLEAZY UNCLE, a witty, insightful study of human nature, he puts forth the message that tolerance, love and understanding can enrich one's life. And to get the most out of life "Italian Style," one must know how to have fun. But Brusati has a more astringent message as well.

His countrymen should sing less and look harder at their problems; only then will they have a better understanding of how to solve them. (Violence, profanity, sexual situations, adult situations.)
