Starrett, in his pre-cowboy days, is the engineer of a Chicago-to-Nevada train. On board are the usual cast of characters, including Farnum, the railroad president, and his daughter Blane--the apple of Starrett's eye. Pichel is a German mechanic in a hurry to leave Chicago after murdering

an official from his native land at the Century of Progress exposition. Also aboard is a shipment of iron lungs which must reach their destination in just 19 hours in order to halt a deadly outbreak of infantile paralysis. It's all formula material told at a lightning-fast pace which handily

covers up the numerous holes and implausiblities. The Burlington Railroad's Zephyr gets plenty of plugs here, undoubtedly as compensation for RKO's use of their choo-choo. Audiences apparently enjoyed this train ride, for THE SILVER STREAK cleared over $107,000 in profits, a tidy sum for the

day.
