A well-known Australian tale which played on the stage a number of times and was previously filmed as a silent. Longden (in one of his handful of Australian films between 1934-36 before returning to England to appear in more Hitchcock pictures) stars as a minister who molests the town

tease, Francis. The girl becomes pregnant and her father plans action against Longden. A struggle ensues and the father is accidentally killed. Longden escapes blame because he was dressed in the local doctor's clothes, thereby throwing blame on the doctor. The doctor, who is engaged to the

minister's sister, refuses to endanger Longden's reputation by implicating him. Longden cannot face the guilt that accompanies his silence so he prepares a confession. Before he can tell the truth, however, he is stricken with a heart attack and the doctor is sent to prison. Twenty years later,

the doctor is released and vows to kill Longden, who has now become a dean. Meanwhile, Longden receives word that the girl he molested is dying; the messenger who brings him those sad tidings is his own child. After another heart attack, Longden learns that the doctor is willing to let him live.

Eaten away by his silence, Longden confesses to his congregation from the pulpit and then collapses on the altar. THE SILENCE OF DEAN MAITLAND is excellently done melodrama.
