Popular comedienne Fields stars in this semi-autobiographical account of her rise from lowly mill girl to famed songstress. When a composer, Nares, hears Fields sing in an out-of-the-way dive, he realizes her potential and woos her away to sing the songs he has composed. Blessed with

new, more popular material to croon, she soon finds herself booked into large music halls and becomes a huge success. Unfortunately, Nares has had tuberculosis for some time and the ailment finally kills him as Fields reaches the height of her popularity, a point in her real life when Fields was

the world's highest paid star. This was a change of pace for Fields whose forte had always been in the comedic vein. Though she handles the serious material admirably, her public was not happy with the change of image and ignored the film at the box office.
