"Shiralee" is an Australian Aborigine word which means a burden. Finch plays an Australian laborer who drifts around the country looking for work. After a few years he returns to his wife, Sellars, only to find her living with another man. He takes Wilson, their five-year-old daughter,

away from this atmosphere and she becomes Finch's shiralee. He is unable to relate to the girl and to give her the love and affection she needs, but still the child prefers to be with her father. The mother instigates court action against her husband, Finch gets beaten up by some thugs, and Wilson

is almost killed by a truck, but THE SHIRALEE ends on a happy note for father and daughter. Their relationship is the heart of this film and ultimately the key factor in making the picture work. The episodic nature gets a bit wearysome at times, but the locational shooting in Australia is

picturesque.
