Egan, deserted Meadows' mother, who died giving birth to him. Meadows is in love with Lynn, but she is promised to Houck. After overhearing Collie bragging about a bank robbery, Houck alerts the sheriff. A shootout follows, and Collie is killed. Middleton admits that Meadows is his grandson and

reveals the gold he has been mining for years. This he gives to Meadows' family, with the reminder to Meadows and Lynn that the only binding contract is love. Lynn and Meadows marry shortly after, and the gold is used to help the community.
