Honeymooning in some unspecified Soviet satellite country, Ogilvy and Steele run off the road and plunge into a lake where, an opening flashback has shown, a witch was drowned in the 18th century. Ogilvy swims to safety, but Steele has vanished, her place taken by the hideous witch who

goes on a murder spree against the descendants of her killers. Karlsen is a nobleman of an old witch-hunting, vampire-stalking family fallen on hard times under the new regime, who has stayed in Transylvania waiting for the witch to fulfill her curse. He convinces Ogilvy that witchcraft is behind

his wife's disappearance and the two team up to capture the witch and properly exorcise her. They conduct the ritual by the lake while dunking the witch. She disappears from the dunking chair and for a moment the men panic, thinking she has escaped. Then Steele floats up, unable to recall anything

of her ordeal. Director Reeves' first feature (he had previously taken over CASTLE OF THE LIVING DEAD halfway through production) shows some of the themes that would emerge in his later films, most notably THE CONQUEROR WORM, his best work. THE SHE BEAST also began Reeves's penchant for downbeat

endings. The film continually shows the restraints of its low budget, but some of the performances are quite good, especially those of cult favorite Steele and Ogilvy. By no means a great film, but one worth seeing, by a director who brought grim new vistas to the horror film before committing

suicide at the age of 25.
