Screen adaptation of Claude Binyon's novel casts Montgomery as an egomaniacal producer out to ruin anyone who gets in his path. Payne, who plays a novelist, finds this out the hard way after ignoring advice from his wife, Hayward. The famous producer has agreed to stage Payne's play on

Broadway. Hayward's attitude toward Montgomery sours after she and her husband are invited to a party given in honor of Payne's new play. The arrogant producer is a bit too pushy for Hayward's taste, and she warns Payne to back out before it is too late. Montgomery then goes on to destroy the

career of his girl friend, Totter, by spreading rumors which cause her to lose her contract. Disagreement between Payne and Hayward over Montgomery's methods eventually leads to a separation. Payne is forced to rewrite most of the play, and the new version fails to attract a much-desired actor.

Hayward gets her jabs at Montgomery, however, when she shows the original play to the actor and another producer and finds willing backers. Payne, immediately informed of the turn of events, rushes back to his wife's side, but not before leaving Montgomery with a black eye. Montgomery mustered all

the nastiness he could to turn in a convincing portrayal of the phony producer. Hayward, cast in a role to which she was not accustomed, gave it her best shot. The script is very witty, but suffers from an overabundance of talk and not enough action.
