In the fourth outing of "the Saint" series, Simon Templar (Sanders) finds himself in hot water when the jewel thief he is after, "the Boss," turns out to be his exact double. (Sanders plays both parts.) With the help of an Egyptian cohort (Lugosi), the Boss uses a mummy to smuggle gems,

but not if the Saint has anything to say about it. This is probably the weakest of Sanders' performances in the series. As the sleuth he's his usual witty self; however, he is never very convincing as the jewel thief. Sanders appears in scenes with himself through the aid of rear screen

projection, but while the technique looks good, it is often difficult to determine which character is which. One scene has the good Saint impersonating the Boss meeting up with the Boss impersonating the Saint. Unfortunately, what might have been inspired madness is presented without the usual

style and wit found in the series' screenplays and the plot quickly becomes muddled. As the smuggler's assistant, Bela Lugosi tried again to break from his "monster movie" image. THE SAINT'S DOUBLE TROUBLE was shot on RKO's back lot in just 19 days.
